SMG helps students score higher on standardized tests!

What is the Stock Market Game?

The Stock Market Game (SMG) is an educational simulation that introduces students to the exciting world of Wall Street and it teaches about the stock markets, the American economic system, and the global economy.

NO PRIOR KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE STOCK MARKET IS NEEDED!

The Stock Market Game is offered in Louisiana exclusively by the Louisiana Council for Economic Education.
Participants develop skills in math, language arts, research and critical thinking, while building and maintaining a stock portfolio.

SMG is used in grades 4-12, college courses, and by those who seek to learn more about investing.
Since 1977, over 8 million students have participated in this national program.

What Do I Need to Know About the Stock Market to Participate?
NO prior knowledge about the stock market is required to participate.

Why is The SMG Program such a great learning tool?
Because participants of all ages and ability levels will:
  • GAIN an understanding of how - and why - our economic system works.
  • APPLY mathematics, social studies, reading, economics to daily decisions.
  • LEARN teamwork, cooperation, and time and information management skills.
  • INCREASE computer proficiency and learn Internet research skills.
  • DISCOVER the rewards involved in making educated decisions.
  • COMPETE in grade/age divisions.
  • MEET state standards.

How does it work?
Teams of one to six students invest a hypothetical $100,000 in a portfolio of common stocks listed on the New York, American stock exchanges, and the NASDAQ stock market.

Most teams use the Internet to follow their portfolios, research stock, enter trades at end-of-day prices, and see their weekly division ranking. There are alternatives for those without Internet access.

At the end of the 15-week period, the teams with the greatest return are declared the winners. Statewide winners, as well as the winners in each of the 5 statewide regions, are award cash prizes, thanks to our sponsor, J.P. Morgan Chase Bank, N.A.!

Are curriculum materials provided?
Lesson plans, curriculum guides, teacher resources and videos for all grade and ability levels are available through the SMG Coordinator. Additional materials are available on the web site.

What does it cost?
Costs are assessed at a fee of $20 per team. Teams may consist of 1 to 6 individuals. Once you register, you will be sent team IDs and passwords. A invoice will be sent via email.

REGISTRATION INFORMATION
Using the Internet, students enter their trades on the SMGWW website (www.smgww.org). Portfolios are updated daily and rankings updated weekly (on Saturday). All information is obtained on the website. Teachers must have an e-mail address to access team numbers and receive information sent out during the game. The e-mail address used should be the one most used, whether that is the school e-mail address or the one at home.

SUGGESTIONS FOR ADVISORS WITH LIMITED COMPUTER ACCESS

  • When organizing teams, be sure there is one student on each team who has a computer at home who can be designated as the "trade enterer." Team decisions and related lessons can take place in the classroom during class time.

  • Teachers with only a few teams and a computer at home or in the school’s library can collect the trades from the teams and enter the trades themselves.

  • Teams can be assigned certain days to use a school’s limited computer resources (usually in the library) and spread them out over a one-week period so everyone gets to trade once a week.

  • Public libraries often have computers with Internet connections that can be scheduled for use.
